Cillian Murphy's Return to the Franchise
Director Danny Boyle has officially announced that Cillian Murphy will reprise his iconic role in the 28 Days Later series.
Murphy, who originally starred in the 2002 classic 28 Days Later, is set to feature in the forthcoming sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
In a recent discussion, Boyle shared that Murphy's character will play a crucial part in the third installment, which is still awaiting official approval.
The success of 28 Years Later at the box office, along with Murphy's participation, could significantly influence the project's future.
Boyle commended the introduction of Murphy's character in the sequel, describing it as 'pretty good' and a 'very smart use of him.' This new trilogy, developed by Boyle and writer Alex Garland, will include interconnected characters, featuring a new addition, 12-year-old Spike, portrayed by Alfie Williams, who will appear throughout the series.
Both films, 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, have been filmed consecutively, with Boyle citing reasons related to logistics, actor availability, and narrative continuity.
The release date for 28 Years Later is set for June 20, while 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled to hit theaters on January 16, 2026.
